As of January 1, 2017, any garbage not placed in a hard-sided container in Wards 1, 2 and 3, with a watertight lid will not be collected and property owners may be subject to fines. This new regulation was created to discourage the proliferation of urban rodents and other animals (i.e. skunks, raccoons, opossums, rats, etc.) by eliminating a major food source. Hard sided containers also reduce messy litter from torn garbage bags. Residents and businesses are responsible for obtaining their own approved hard-sided containers. Items such as boxsprings, mattresses, couches, chairs, and similar materials can still be put out any regular garbage day.
Residents located south of County Rd 42 (with the exception of the Cranbrook/Dimu subdivisions) are exempt for the hard sided container requirements (see map below).
