Household Chemical Waste

Household Chemical Waste (HCW) materials are harmful to humans, animals and the environment, as well as begin the leading cause of water pollution in North America. They should never be flushed down the toilet, poured down the sink or deposited in a storm drain. Storm drains are not treated or filtered. Everything that goes into a storm drain flows into local creeks and lakes. Prevent this by using the HCW Depot. These items can be dropped off free of charge for residential customers only. Residential customers are restricted to two (2) twenty (20) litre pails of household chemical waste per trip.

Common HCW items include:batteries

  • Oil and oil filters
  • Glues/ Adhesives
  • Batteries (all types)
  • Propane tanks and cylinders
  • Car care products
  • Gasoline
  • Fluorescent lights
  • Paints, varnishes and stains
  • Pesticides
  • Pool Chemicals

This centre has products that are used, but not 'used up' (such as paint). Pickup most of these products free of charge.

Electronic Waste

Electronic waste (e-waste) is the fastest growing source of waste in North America. As faster, smaold computersller and more powreful computer equipment, phones, televisions, stereos, and small home appliances are introduced, current models quickly become obsolete. Unfortunately, these electronics are filling up landfills fast.

Lead, cadmium and mercury are found in most electroic equipment, making them a hazardous risk to human health and the environment if they are not disposed of properly.

Point of Interest:The Town of Tecumseh pays tipping fees for garbage disposal and recyclables disposed of in garbage. Tipping fees paid for recyclables in garbage unnecessarily increase our costs and reduce the life of our landfill space.

Recycling remains important because:

  • It protects natural resources - making products from recycled materials instead of virgin materials reduces the need to harvest, drill or mine for new raw material.
  • Saves energy - it usually takes less energy to make recycled products than new ones.
  • Saves landfill space - recycling diverts items from landfills or incinerators and extends the landfill life-span. No one wants more landfills.
  • Creates jobs - the recycling industry creates more jobs than landfills. The more we recycle and the more we choose products made with recycled material, the more we can stimulate economic growth.
  • Protects clean air and water - making products from recycled materials generally creates less pollution than making new ones.

Help us keep our costs down by recycling and encouraging those you know to recycle. Recycling is good for the environment and good for everyone.
