Structural Fire Investigations are conducted by the department in concert with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office. Documentation, witness statements, photographs, preservation of evidence and scene continuity are maintained throughout the process of firefighting, overhaul and salvage operations.
The analysis of fire behaviour indicators and the determination of the area and point of origin of the fire are maintained and managed consistent with sound investigative practices, standards and NFPA 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations.
Vehicle fire investigations are not the responsibility of the department. Fires of suspicious origin originating in vehicles are reported to the Ontario Provincial Police and may be investigated by the Insurance Crime Prevention Bureau of Canada.
