Waste Collection in Tecumseh will return to normal pick-up as of June 4, 2020 in accordance with the hard-sided container by-law. All household waste must be in an acceptable hard-sided container, not bags, or it will not be collected. At the Regular Meeting of Council on April 28, 2020, Council approved temporary changes to the Town’s Waste Collection to accept an additional two (2) bags of household waste per week until May 28, 2020.

“We made the decision to allow for extra bags while the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA) public drop off depot was closed,” said Gary McNamara, Mayor of Tecumseh. “With the reopening of the depot and other transfer stations in the County, we are moving back to our original waste restrictions which were put in place to reduce rodents and urban wildlife.”

Details on acceptable containers for waste collection are found on page 3 of the Tecumseh Collection Calendar or online (https://www.tecumseh.ca/en/living-here/resources/Documents/2020-Tecumseh-Calendar_web.pdf). Green For Life/Windsor Disposal Service (GFL/WDS) will not collect unacceptable containers or additional bags placed out for collection as of June 4, 2020. It is also important to note that EWSWA will no longer accept plastic bags in blue boxes as of June 1, 2020 and items placed in bags for recycling or blue boxes found with bags in them will not be collected on recycling day.

Renovation debris is not accepted at curbside collection and will not be picked up. This includes materials placed in a hard sided container or in bags. GFL/WDS reserves the right to reject any waste they deem not acceptable or unsafe for collection. There are no exceptions and containers/bags will be left curbside.

“We were pleased to be able to provide additional service during the closure of the drop off depot and transfer stations regionally,” said Phil Bartnik, Director Public Works and Environmental Services. “Regular service is clearly outlined in the Town’s collection calendar and on our website.”

White goods like appliances must be registered for collection and residents may do so at 519-735-2184 ext. 142. Furniture like mattresses, bookshelves or dressers is acceptable and be placed at the curb for regular pick-up. If residents see anyone dumping waste in Town they are encouraged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 with details on the vehicle including license plate, make and model.
