Tecumseh Honours Indigenous Peoples on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On Monday, September 28, the Town of Tecumseh will raise the Every Child Matters flag at Town Hall to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed annually on September 30th.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the children who never returned home and the Survivors of residential schools, as well the families and communities who continue to endure the impacts. The flag is a symbol of remembrance, respect, and our continued commitment to reconciliation.

It is an opportunity to reflect on the lasting impacts of residential schools, listen with openness, and to reaffirm our shared responsibility for reconciliation through truth and understanding.  In a community that bears the name of Chief Tecumseh, we are reminded of the importance that respect, unity, and shared purpose play in shaping the path we walk today and for generations to come.

The Town of Tecumseh is committed to ongoing learning, understanding, and reconciliation. We encourage all residents to take this day to remember, reflect, learn, and to consider how we can contribute to reconciliation in our community and beyond.

The Town is hosting an Orange Shirt Day Memorial Walk on Tuesday September 29th to honour and remember all residential school survivors. Patricia Shawnoo from the Tecumtha Ogitchada Society will provide a keynote message and lead the gathering.
