Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Flag Raising: Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

From September 9 to 16, 2025 a Gold Ribbon Flag will be raised, and Town Hall illuminated yellow in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  The month of September is recognized internationally as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness about childhood cancer and the devastating effects it can have on families. Childhood cancer is unique to adult cancer—often no clear cause, and different in type and the intensity of treatment on growing and developing bodies.  Close to 500 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Ontario and over 4,500 families have a child in cancer treatment or follow-up care. 2 of every 3 survivors are at an increased risk of long-term effects of their cancer or treatment. This is a time to reflect on how we as a community can better understand and address the needs of children affected by cancer, as well as their families and caregivers.
