Notice of Municipal Election
Notice of Election, Municipal Elections Act, 1996 (s.40)
Municipal Elections in Ontario are held every four years on the fourth Monday of October.
The upcoming Municipal Election will be held Monday, October 26, 2026.
Pursuant to the requirements of the Municipal Elections Act:
NOTICE is hereby given to the Municipal Electors of the Town of Tecumseh that the next Municipal and School Board Election to elect a Mayor, Deputy Mayor, five (5) at-large Councillors, and four School Board Trustees is on October 26, 2026.
The new term of Council begins November 15, 2026, and ends November 14, 2030.
On July 24, 2025, Town Council passed By-Law 2025-090 to authorize the use of internet and telephone voting for the 2026 Municipal and School Board Election. The electronic method ensures that eligible electors can cast their ballot in an accessible, convenient, safe and environmentally friendly method of voting. This method of voting was used in the 2018 and 2022 Municipal Elections.
In accordance with section 17(2) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, a person is entitled to be an elector at an election held in a local municipality if on voting day they;
- reside in the local municipality or are the owner or tenant of land there, or are the spouse of such owner or tenant;
- are a Canadian citizen;
- are at least 18 years old; and
- are not otherwise prohibited from voting by law.
Key Dates:
- April 8 – Information Session for Prospective Candidates
- April 23 - Candidate Information Session at Town Hall
- May 1 – Candidate Nomination and Third-Party Advertiser registration Period Begins
- August 21 at 2:00 pm – End of Candidate Nomination Period
- August 22 - Registered Candidates can erect campaign signs in the Town
- September 28 – Advance Voting Opens
- October 26 – Voting Day
- November 17 –Town of Tecumseh Inaugural Meeting of Council for the 2026-2030 term
Voter Information:
Eligible voters will be able to vote online or by phone starting September 28 at 10:00AM until October 26, 2026 at 8:00PM. Voters may confirm, update or add their information to the voters' list online at RegistertoVoteON.ca until August 14, 2026.
Candidate Information:
Individuals wanting to run in this election may file nomination papers starting May 1, 2026. The final day to file nomination papers is August 21, 2026, between 9:00AM and 2:00PM.
Nominations will be open for the following offices:
- Mayor (1)
- Deputy Mayor (1)
- Ward Councillor (5)
- School Board Trustee (4)
The County of Essex is holding a free Information Session for Prospective Candidates on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 6:00PM to 9:00PM for individuals thinking about running in this year’s election and want to learn more about the rules and procedures. Additionally, the Town of Tecumseh is hosting a free Candidate Information Session on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 6:00PM at Town Hall in Council Chambers.
