Ontario Investing to Protect More Firefighters

Issued by MPP Leardi's Office on January 13, 2026

TECUMSEH— As part of its plan to protect Ontario and keep communities safe, the Ontario government is supporting firefighters at Tecumseh Fire Rescue Services by investing $34,893 through the Fire Protection Grant. The funding will be used to purchase 9 structural firefighting gear sets—also known as bunker sets—including jackets, pants, boots, helmets, face covers, masks and gloves. This equipment provides critical thermal protection, helping firefighters perform their duties safely and effectively.

“Our firefighters put their lives on the line every day to keep our community safe, and it’s essential that they have the equipment they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said Andrew Dowie, MPP for Windsor–Tecumseh. “This Fire Protection Grant investment will help equip Tecumseh Fire and Rescue Services with modern, reliable protective gear, enhancing firefighter safety during emergencies when it matters most.”

This year’s Fire Protection Grant will support all 380 municipal fire services in Ontario, helping the approximately 33,000 firefighters who protect Ontario and keep our communities safe.

This funding will support eligible projects including:

  • Equipment, supplies and personal protective equipment that enhance municipal cancer prevention initiatives
  • Equipment and supplies for lithium-ion battery incident response
  • Minor infrastructure upgrades and modernization, including enhanced broadband and internet connectivity

“Firefighters are always there when we need them, running towards danger to protect our homes and our communities,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “That is why we’re doubling this year’s Fire Protection Grant, giving even more firefighters across the province the tools they need to stay safe and effectively respond to life threatening emergencies.”

“This year’s grant will be used to purchase a second set of bunker gear for a number of our firefighters,” said Fire Chief Wade Bondy.  “The equipment supports our ongoing priority to reduce cancer risks on the front lines with gear that provides protection for firefighters and the ability to do their jobs effectively.”

“This funding demonstrates a continued commitment to firefighter safety,” said Mayor Gary McNamara. “Our firefighters provide critical services for the Tecumseh community, and the Fire Protection Grant acknowledges the importance of investing in equipment and supplies that prioritize health and safety during response efforts.”
