Speed Management and Traffic Calming
In 2024, Town council approved and adopted Speed Management and Traffic Calming Policy 126 (effective April 9, 2024), which includes best practices to manage speed and implement traffic calming on municipal roads. It provides a procedure for assessing the need for traffic calming or other speed mitigation measures when concerns are received. You can view the full policy below:

As part of Policy 126, the Public Works & Engineering Services brings a report to council at the end of each calendar year summarizing the traffic-related recommendations governed by the policy. This also includes recommendation of works to be included as part of PWES Capital Works plan for the following calendar year(s).
2025 Traffic Calming Improvements Program
As a result of the 2024 traffic review and recommendations related to Policy 126, PWES has initiated the 2025 Traffic Calming Improvements Program. Speed mitigation measures were found to be appropriate through the Policy along the following streets and street limits:
- Arlington Boulevard, between Riverside Drive East to Tecumseh Road
- McNorton Street, between St. Thomas Crescent to Lesperance Road
- Shawnee Road, between Tecumseh Road to Arbour Street
- Southfield Drive, between Tecumseh Road to Brouillette Court
- *Intersection Road, between Banwell Road to Shawnee Road
In reviewing the detailed analysis completed at each location and consulting with Tecumseh Transit Services and Fire Services, it was determined that physical traffic calming measures would be an appropriate form of speed management. The type of traffic calming feature selected is a type of vertical deflection, referred to as a speed cushion / hump. They are intended to produce sufficient discomfort to reduce speeds of vehicular traffic using the roadway, while allowing larger vehicles such as buses and emergency vehicles to pass without difficulty.
*The installation of speed cushions along Intersection Road has been delayed pending completion of the Tecumseh Hamlet Northwest Water & Wastewater Infrastructure Project, which is anticipated by the end of 2025. As a result, the installation of the speed cushions along Intersection Road is anticipated to commence in Spring 2026.
