Individuals wanting to run for the office of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillor, or School Board Trustee may file nomination papers starting May 1, 2026. The final day to file nomination papers is August 21, 2026, between 9:00AM and 2:00PM - Please see "How do I file my nomination?" below to learn how.

Candidates may begin filing their nomination forms and may continue to file on any business day thereafter up until August 21, 2026. On August 21, 2026, candidate forms may be filed between 9:00AM and 2:00PM only.
August 21, 2026 - Nomination Day
This is the last day to file a nomination or to withdraw your nomination. On this date, nomination forms and withdrawals may only be submitted between the hours of 9:00AM and 2:00PM.
To withdraw, candidates are to file written notice to the Town Clerk.
August 24, 2026 - Certification Day
The Town Clerk shall examine all filed nomination forms prior to 4:00PM and, if satisfied, certify the nominations or, if applicable, declare any candidates elected by acclamation.
September 28, 2026 - Voting Opens
The only methods for voting in Tecumseh will be internet and telephone voting.
If you are on the Voters' List, you will receive a Voter Information Letter prior to this date which will provide you with the Personal Identification Number (PIN) you will need, as well as detailed instructions on how to cast your vote.
October 26, 2026 - Last Day to Vote
Voting ends at 8:00PM.
November 17, 2026 - Inaugural Meeting
Elected candidates will take the oath of office before assuming their seat. The inaugural meeting of the new Council will be held on this date at a time to be set.
December 31, 2026 - Campaign Period Ends
Last day for candidates and registered third-party advertisers to provide written notice of a deficit and the continuation of their campaign period.
In the case of a deficit, a candidate or registered third-party may request an extension of the campaign period by completing and filing with the Town Clerk a Form 6 - Notice of Extension of Campaign Period. This notice must be filed on or before December 31 in the year of a regular election or 45 days after voting day in the case of a by-election.
March 30, 2027 - Filing Deadline
By 2:00PM candidates and registered third-party advertisers must file their initial financial statements and auditor report.

All candidates, including - those not elected, those who withdraw their nomination, and those whose nomination is rejected by the Town Clerk - must disclose and report their contributions and expenses, using the Financial Statement - Auditor's Report - Candidate Form 4.
A Candidate's campaign period starts on the date the nomination is filed and ends on December 31, 2026, or, if the nomination is withdrawn, on the date of withdrawal.
Financial Statements are to be filed with the Town Clerk no later than 2:00PM on March 30, 2027.
Should a Candidate file a Form 6 - Notice of Extension of Campaign Period (linked above) to extend their campaign, the Candidate will be required to file supplementary filings.
The filing period for the 2026 Municipal and School Board Election nominations opens May 1, 2026 at 8:30AM and closes August 21, 2026 at 2:00PM.
Nominations must be filed in person at the office of the Town Clerk located in Town Hall, 917 Lesperance Road, Tecumseh, Ontario. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.

Who can run for School Board Trustee?
To run for a trustee position on a school board, you must be eligible to vote in that school board election and meet the following requirements:

Do I need to provide identification?
Yes. In order to submit your nomination, you must provide two pieces of identification. One must show that you are a Canadian citizen and one must identify your qualifying address. All identification must be valid (not expired) and original.

Yes. The fee to file a nomination is $100 for the Office of Councillor ($200 for Head of Council). This fee must be paid to the Clerk at the time you submit your nomination form. Your nomination fee will be refunded if you file your campaign financial statement by the deadline of March 30, 2027.
The ability for candidates to withdraw their nominations ends on August 21, 2026 at 2:00PM.
A candidate may withdraw their nomination by filing a written withdrawal to the Clerk's Office.

When can candidates begin campaigning?
Once candidates have filed their nomination papers with the Clerk's Office, they are able to begin raising and spending money on their campaign.
When can candidates begin to put up lawn signs?
Candidates can put up their campaign signs starting September 19, 2026. All lawn signs must adhere to the regulations as contained in Town of Tecumseh Election Sign By-Law 2018-32.
Complaints about lawn signs should be submitted to clerks@tecumseh.ca or can be reported by calling 519-735-2184 during regular business hours.
When do candidates have to remove their lawn signs?
Candidates must remove their signs by 11:59PM on October 29, 2026.
Are candidates or people representing candidates allowed to canvass in apartment buildings/condos?
Yes. Candidates, or their representatives, are permitted to canvas door-to-door in apartments and condos between 9:00AM and 9:00PM.
No, according to section 88.20 (8) of the Municipal Elections Act, the cost of parties and gifts of appreciation after the close of voting do not count towards your regular expense limit for the election. However, these costs are subject to a separate expense limit established in section 88.20 (9) of the MEA.
