Municipal Election Campaign Incident

Last weekend, an incident occurred regarding removal of campaign material from a private mailbox. The Town was made aware of the incident, and with the permission of the affected property owner, referred the incident to the OPP.  The OPP undertook an investigation into the incident and, as of today, the investigation has concluded.

The Municipal Elections Act regulates the Town on how to operate the Municipal and School Board Elections through various rules as outlined in this legislation.  The Act provides duties for candidates regarding their responsibilities in financial reporting and compliance during their campaign period. It does not outline a code of conduct for candidates to follow.

The Town is disappointed that this incident has occurred and prefers that candidates conduct themselves in a manner which is accountable to the constituency which they are seeking to represent in the 2022-2026 term of Council or School Board. This includes best practices that demonstrate exemplary behaviour, including at a minimum, refraining from:

  • Any tampering with, removal of, or damage to the campaign materials of any other candidate;
  • Maligning other candidates verbally or in media of any kind on a personal basis, and particularly in any way which would be contrary to the Ontario Human Rights Code or be considered to be harassing or bullying behaviour under the Town’s Council Code of Conduct.

The 2022 Municipal and School Board Election runs from Friday, October 14, 2022, at 8:30 am to Monday, October 24, 2022 at 8 pm. Election Day is on October 24, 2022 from 8:30am – 8:00pm. Visit tecumsehvotes.ca to vote.
