Tecumseh Council Completes 2023 Budget Deliberations

Tecumseh, ON - Tecumseh Town Council completed the budget deliberations for 2023, with a consolidated (County, education and municipal) tax rate increase of 3.43%. The increase in the tax levy approved by Council on January 17 – as part of the 2023 budget – translates into $122 for the average residential property assessed at $250,000 (based on MPAC’s 2016 current value assessment, which is the basis for the 2017-2023 tax years). The Tecumseh portion of this lift is $75.

Council began deliberations with a draft municipal tax rate increase of 4.42% and lowered that to 3.86% before approving the budget last evening. This consists of 1.5% towards capital and asset lifecycle funding, 1.4% non-controllable expense increases passed on to municipality (insurance, benefits, contracted services) and 1.0% for general operating expenditures.

The three main themes of the 2023 budget are:

  • Incorporates Council’s Adopted Capital Works Plans
  • Responds to inflationary trends
  • Addresses Community Growth Demands on staffing

“2023 is a difficult budget year,” said Mayor Gary McNamara. “While balancing the rise of inflation and market pressures, we preserved our contributions to capital and will continue to provide the services our residents have come to expect and rely on. This budget also enables our own stormwater protection and growth objectives as well as works towards Provincial housing growth requirements.”

2023 will see several new infrastructure projects, including Lacasse Ball Diamond Upgrades, Lakewood Park Washrooms and Splash Pad, Artificial Turf Soccer Field in partnership with L’Essor High School, Scully & St. Mark’s Storm Pump Station Replacement, Lesperance/VIA At-Grade Road Improvements, County Road 42/43 Watermain and Sanitary Sewer Replacement, Cada Library Building Improvements, Maidstone Recreation Centre Outdoor Washrooms, EV Charging Stations and an enhanced Fire Radio System.
