The Town of Tecumseh is launching a 30-day consultation on retail cannabis facilities in Town. Anyone wishing to provide comments and engage in conversation on the prospect of permitting retail cannabis in Tecumseh may do so via the Town’s PlaceSpeak platform. During the consultation period, Administration will be compiling a report including any data that can be sourced on the experience of retail cannabis in other jurisdictions. This will be shared with Council at a future meeting.

“When we made the decision to opt out of hosting retail cannabis facilities, it was still early and there were many unknowns,” said Gary McNamara, Mayor of Tecumseh. “Over the last two years we have seen how the industry has operated and my colleagues and I agreed to seek out public comment and information from Administration and possibly reconsider allowing these businesses in Town.”

Council had heard from two delegations at the April 13, 2021 meeting imploring them to reconsider their decision to opt out of retail cannabis sales in Town in 2018. Following the discussion, Council moved to reconsider its earlier decision prohibiting retail cannabis and requested Administration report back on data and experience with retail cannabis facilities in other jurisdictions as well as updated Public Health information.

The topic has been added to the Town’s PlaceSpeak page and will be available for public comment for 30 days (April 26 to May 26). Users may log into the platform and provide comments on the matter. All comments will are available to Council in real-time for their reference. PlaceSpeak is free to sign up and easy to navigate.

Following the 30 day comment period and collection of information requested by Council, a report will be provided to Council in June. Council is expected to make a decision on the matter at that time.
