Essex County OPP Detachment Board - North

The Essex County OPP Detachment  Board - North (the "Board") is a joint detachment board representing the individual communities of the Town of Essex, Town of Tecumseh, and Municipality of Lakeshore to which the Ontario Provincial Police ("OPP") provide community policing services.

On April 1, 2024, the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 replaced the Police Services Act, 1990, resulting in the existing police services boards for Tecumseh, Essex and Lakeshore to dissolved and the establishment of the Board was established.

The Board serves as an advisory board and the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019, outlines the role of the Detachment Board as follows:

  • To aid in the selection of a detachment commander.
  • To determine objectives and priorities for the detachment.
  • to advise the detachment commander regarding policing provided by the detachment.
  • To monitor the performance of the detachment commander.
  • to review reports from the detachment commander regarding policing provided by the detachment.
  • to provide annual reports to the Councils for the Town of Essex, Town of Tecumseh, and Municipality of Lakeshore regarding the policing provided by the detachment in their respective municipalities.

Meetings are held at 9:30AM in Town of Tecumseh Council Chambers, 917 Lesperance Road, Tecumseh, ON and virtually at www.Tecumseh.ca/live. Any person wishing to speak to a matter before the Detachment Board must submit a request to Gabby Johnstone, Council and Committee Assistant at gjohnstone@tecumseh.ca no less than nine (9) working days before the date of the meeting.

The Board is comprised of 9 Members. Members are appointed for a four-year term (The upcoming term will commence November 15, 2026 until November 14, 2030).

Members are paid for their position on the Board.

Meetings are held at Tecumseh Town Hall in Council Chambers approximately six (6) times a year and administrative support for the Board is provided by the Town of Tecumseh.
