You must book an appointment before attending Town Hall.

Please note, the Town of Tecumseh does not perform civil marriage ceremonies.

You must apply online with ServiceOntario for a marriage licence before picking it up in-person from your local municipality. Once you submit your application, the Town will be notified and we will contact you to arrange an appointment (or you may call the Town to do so). Only one of you needs to attend.

Appointments will be at Town Hall between the hours of 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. See below for details of what to bring to the appointment.

A non-refundable licence fee is $140.00 is payable by cash or debit only. No personal cheques or credit cards are accepted.

The marriage licence is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

To get a marriage licence, you must:

Complete a marriage licence application online at ServiceOntario (linked below).
Provide 2 pieces of government-issued identification for each person getting married. One piece of identification for each person getting married must include their photo. You will bring this ID to the appointment.
Provide supporting documentation (for example: proof of divorce) (if applicable).
Have at least one of you attend in-person to pick up the licence.
Pay the fee.

You must be at least 16 years old to get married in Ontario. If you are under 18 years old, you must obtain written consent from all parents/legal guardians. Each parent/legal guardian must complete the Consent of Parents or Guardians to Marriage Form, each of which is to be brought to your appointment with the Town.

You must bring to your appointment two (2) pieces of valid Government issued original ID for each of you (No photocopies), one of which must include your photo. You can upload the ID with your online application, but do not have to. If you do, the same ID must be brought to the appointment. examples of accepted ID are:

Birth Certificate including any change of name certificates
Valid passport
Record of immigration landing
Canadian Citizenship Card
Ontario Health Card
Valid Driver's Licence
Nexus Card

If you are planning on remarrying in Ontario you will need to provide some additional documents.

Divorced in Canada?

You will need to bring to your appointment proof of the divorce, which can be the original or a court-certified copy of one of the following:

the final decree
the final judgement
a certificate of divorce

If you were divorced outside Canada you will need to deliver the following documents to ServiceOntario for validation by the government which may take up to 4 weeks to process:

marriage licence application form, completed and signed by you both
Statement of Sole Responsibility for each divorce completed and signed by you both
legal opinion letter from an Ontario lawyer, addressed to both of you, giving reasons why the divorce should be recognized in Ontario
divorce decree or annulment in either English or French, or if in another language, you must include a translation and affidavit sworn by a certified translator.

Completed Foreign Divorce Authorizations will be sent to you by courier. It is important that your full mailing address including suite/unit/apartment and buzzer number is included on the marriage licence application form, or the courier package cannot be delivered and will be returned to ServiceOntario

At your appointment, once you complete the application and you both sign it, provide the necessary identification, and pay the fee, Town staff will prepare the Marriage Licence, meet with you as set out in the Marriage (Prohibited Degrees) Act, and administer the Oath.

Apply for a Marriage Licence Online
