Basement Flooding

As a homeowner, you can reduce the risk from basement flooding by carrying out the following:

  • Make sure the ground and pavement slope away from your home
  • Properly install and maintain your sump pump and backwater valve
  • Provide backup power supply to the sump pump
  • Remove cross-connections between the sump pump, sanitary pipes or floor drain
  • Disconnect downspouts from the storm piping
  • Ensure there are no cracks in the stormwater piping around your home
  • Ensure there are no cracks or holes in the basement walls or floors that may allow water to enter the basement
